The GSS strives to promote and advocate for the rights of graduate students to our University and to the government. Along with our regular work, we campaign to raise important issues, inform graduate students, and provide a platform to have the voices of graduate students heard.
BE BOLD AT THE POLLS | FEDERAL ELECTION 2019
On October 21, 2019, Canada goes to the polls in 338 ridings across the country, in its 43rd House of Commons Elections. With young people, between the age of 18 to 38 years, making the largest voting block in the country making up 37% of all voters, it is necessary that they are dually informed towards their voting duty, helping decide the future based on the policies and agendas that resonate with them.
Through September and October 2019, Graduate Student Society will be running a campus wide, non-partisan, election campaign to encourage students to vote wisely for their future. We will be educating UBC students regarding the policies and agendas of all political parties, process of registering votes and other important measures leading to the election day.
Get involved through a number of events we have planned for students which include opportunities for students to:
Meet Vancouver Quadra Candidates in an informal setting
Pledge for election mandates that match your concerns
Join our social media Time to be Bold at the Polls Campaign
Engage in political conversations with experts
…as well as many others in upcoming events till the election date (Oct. 21, 2019).
Follow GSS Events and our Facebook page to stay up to date with the upcoming events, and share your voice this election.
On September 27th, the GSS joined students of UBC, along with the rest of Vancouver, in the Global Climate Strike movement by walking out of their classrooms and work places, to demand action and attention towards climate.
We, as the Graduate Student Society, aim to be a part of this movement along with the rest of the University, to draw attention and show power to this crucial environmental, social and economic crisis, not only affecting us directly, but destroying the future of our coming generations. We invite graduate students from across campus to join us in protest to demand urgent and decisive action leading up to the Federal Elections. We also call upon all political parties to make climate justice forefront of their agenda and commit to making Canada a leader in the international climate policies.
The GSS also endorses the open letter sent to UBC, calling on the University to take a leadership role in climate policy.
