The five student executives and five staff members who manage the day-to-day operations of the Graduate Student Society of UBC Vancouver (GSS) are creators and instigators. Yes, they obsess over details, like commas, fonts, and picas, but they also mix with big ideas. They get the 10,000 UBC graduate students talking, get them stoked and inspired for an active and balanced campus life.

The Digital Communications Manager collaborates with other GSS team members (e.g. General Manager and Events Manager) and works closely with the Communications and Marketing Director in the development and management of the GSS’ online presence, thereby furthering the GSS brand and delivering our overall marketing strategy and goals to engage the UBC graduate student community.

Roles and Responsibilities

Website Management:

  • Performs timely website updates through the WordPress platform
  • Manages content assets for the websites, including copy, images, and other documents, as provided by the Communications and Marketing Director or gathered from other team members at the direction of the Director
  • Generates analytics reports, such as click-through rates from Google Analytics, and provides insights for the consideration of the Director
  • Researches and identifies potential applications, plugins, and other trending web technologies to enhance GSS web experience
  • Other duties as required

Social Media:

  • Builds and cultivates a strong online graduate student community
  • Develops an editorial calendar that identifies the content type (e.g. GSS updates, events, tips, elections, UBC news) and outlines a publishing schedule for the GSS’ social media channels
  • Researches for post content, including copy, images, videos, and other information relevant to UBC graduate students and their interests
  • Publishes regular updates on GSS’ social media platforms, such as Facebook Page, Facebook Events, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
  • Populates a database of websites and social media handles of all UBC graduate programs/departments/faculties and graduate student associations
  • Creates analytics reports, such as engagement rates from Facebook Insights and Twitter Analytics
  • Researches and identifies potential trends and applications to enhance GSS social media experience
  • Other duties as required

Supervision

  • The student reports and receives directions and guidance from the Communications and Marketing Director
  • Weekly one-on-one strategic marketing meetings with the Communications and Marketing Director, General Manager, and Events Manager to determine workflow, set priorities and provide feedback
  • The student also works closely with the GSS Student Executive and other staff
  • A mid-term check-in point evaluation and an exit interview will be administered to set goals, review performance, and identify areas for professional development

Relationship to Goal

  • The Communications and Marketing Team provides web and marketing and communications expertise to build engagement between the GSS and graduate student community at UBC Vancouver.

Qualifications

General:

  • A UBC graduate student preferred with background in marketing, communications, journalism or a related field
  • Experience with integrated marketing communications strategy preferred
  • Excellent team player and self-motivated learner
  • Strong time management and project coordination skills
  • Ability to work under pressure in a deadline driven environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Student with their own computer and necessary software strongly preferred

Website Management:

  • Must have experience working with content management systems such as WordPress and plugins
  • A minimum of basic skills in writing HTML and CSS
  • Experience with using and configuring Google Analytics
  • A solid understanding of or willingness to learn writing for the web and user experience
  • Experience with web graphics and design preferred
  • Bonus points if you can code or have experience with PHP and managing mobile-enabled sites

Social Media:

  • Must have experience working with social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Flickr, and LinkedIn
  • Experience with or willingness to learn development and management of social media editorial calendar
  • Experience with using Facebook Analytics and Twitter Analytics preferred
  • A solid understanding of or willingness to learn the different functions/uses of different social media platforms
  • Knowledge of the social media presence of various UBC departments and graduate student organizations preferred

Student Learning Components

  • A deeper understanding of in-bound marketing and branding for non-profits, as well as exposure to current web and social media practices and trends
  • Opportunity to network with GSS Student Executive, staff and external stakeholders and develop interpersonal communications skills within a small team environment
  • The Communications and Marketing Director will mentor the student in the following areas:
    • Website management
    • Social media management
    • Integrated marketing/communications strategy
    • In-bound marketing
  • Workplace orientation provided, orienting the student to resources extant in the GSS and UBC:
    • Office tour with introduction to GSS team members
    • An introduction to the hardware and software available
    • Human Resources manual, as well as policies and procedures
    • One-hour meeting with the Communications and Marketing Director and the General Manager to identify expectations and outline strategic objects for the position
    • A briefing of activities of the Events Manager and GSS programs and events being planned
  • Opportunity to build skills in website management and WordPress, which is a critical web platform for any student interested in a career related to web marketing
  • Opportunity to gain experience in social media management and build skills essential for any student interested in a career related to digital marketing
  • Strengthen skills in collaborating as a team and working with different stakeholders with the UBC graduate community
  • Opportunity to suggest and implement innovative web development and social media ideas
  • The student will learn the importance of flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment and will be able to apply that to other organizations
  • The student will enhance their skills in project management, decision-making, and time management while completing multiple projects concurrently
  • The student is also encouraged to ask questions and to contribute ideas to improving current marketing strategies and campaigns
  • The student will have an opportunity to apply written and verbal communications skills in a workplace context as their tasks will involve presenting information to supervisors and GSS stakeholders

Hours of Work

  • 5-10 hours per week

Wage

  • $14.69 per hour
  • Paid semi-weekly
