Council

What is the GSS Council?

The GSS Council represents and advocates on behalf of all UBC graduate students to the University, the Government, and the public. We provide academic, professional, social, and recreational services to our members, and act as stewards of the Thea Koerner House Graduate Student Centre.

All graduate departments, regardless of size, are entitled to appoint one council member to the GSS Council. Larger departments may request a second council member however, this is dependent on the number of enrolments in that department.

How do I become a GSS Councillor?

Step 1: Contact the GSS (aa@gss.ubc.ca) to see if your department has a representative on Council.

Step 2: If there is a vacancy, you will need to inform your department’s Graduate Student Association (or equivalent), Graduate Secretary, or Graduate Administration staff  that you are interested in becoming the Departmental Representative.

Council members must be appointed in an open and democratic  election.

  • Should you be the only candidate interested in the role of Departmental Representative, you will need to complete the Affidavit of Election and return it to the GSS.
  • Should there be more than one candidate interested, you will need to contact your department’s Graduate Student Association (or equivalent), Graduate Secretary, or Graduate Administration staff  to organize an election. Once a candidate has been elected, you will need to submit the Affidavit of Election to the GSS.

New Councillor intakes occur in February, June and October each year.

Step 3: Prior to being seated on Council and becoming a voting member, all new council members must attend an orientation session.

The GSS Councillor Handbook provides some background and summarizes the expectations of being a councillor.
