Thea Koerner House Graduate Student Centre

A hidden gem located at the Northwest corner of the beautiful University of British Columbia (UBC) campus (near Rose Garden Parkade, Nitobe Memorial Garden and Flag Pole Plaza), GSC can accommodate a wide range of student, corporate and community events, including workshops, parties, meetings, conferences, dinners, cultural performances, weddings, and more.

From the intimate Penthouse to the spacious Ballroom, the Graduate Student Centre has a space perfect for any event. Featuring indoor and outdoor spaces with a panoramic view of the bustling campus and the breathtaking natural Georgia Strait, our flexible and functional rooms can host both small groups and parties of up to 280 guests.

The solid cedar screens on the building exterior and extensive landscaping, including a water feature in the courtyard, extend a warm welcome to your guests as they arrive. Many of the original features from 1961 when the building was completed, such as ceiling light fixtures and fireplaces, coupled with historical photos and paintings hung throughout the building, enhance every event experience with a touch of UBC’s past.

Thea Koerner House Graduate Student Centre was awarded the prestigious Massey Gold Medals for Architecture in 1961 and considered to be the most outstanding piece of architecture completed in Canada in a three-year period.

GSS Loft

Situated on the fourth floor of the AMS Student Nest, a convenient location in the heart of UBC, the GSS Loft offers a breathtaking 270° panoramic aerial view of the campus. It is suitable for various kinds of academic, social or business events, including workshops, parties, meetings and dinners.

Opened in June 2015, the AMS Student Nest boasts as one of the world’s most sustainable buildings.

Natural light permeates through the floor-to-ceiling window wall of this expansive space with breathtaking views of Georgia Strait.

GSS Penthouse

An intimate space for cozy gatherings with wall-upon-wall of books, a marbled fireplace mantel, and full-length balconies.

Study Room

A spacious quiet room for smaller meetings with a view of +50-year-old pine trees from its floor-to-ceiling window wall and balcony.

Site Visit

Our spaces are available for site visits during normal office hours:
Monday to Friday, 9 am – 5 pm

Graduate student rates

Available to recognized UBC graduate student organizations or faculties. Events must be for current UBC graduate students (where more than 50% of guests will be current UBC graduate students).

Commercial rates

Available to other event organizers and where events are not primarily for current UBC graduate students (where less than 50% of guests will be current UBC graduate students).

You are welcome to use any caterer you like to supply food and beverages for your event.

Labour and Supervision

A minimum of 4 hours of venue rental is required to accommodate set up, take down, opening, closing and supervision.

Supervision is mandatory for all events over 100 people, any event with alcohol, or events held outside of office hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm).



If you will play music at your event, including background music, a mandatory SOCAN music license fee will apply.


If alcohol will be served at your event, a UBC approval for licensed events and a BC Special Event Permit are required.
