GSS Academic Writing Bootcamp

Separate yourself from distractions and non-research responsibilities, and surround yourself with a community of writers at the GSS’s one-day academic bootcamp on September 21st, hosted by the award-winning instructor and editor Dr. Letitia Henville of shortishard.ca. This bootcamp is open to all UBC graduate students. Please arrive 15 mins earlier to check-in!
This one-day writing intensive is structured to break writing anxieties and foster effective writing habits. With a mix of short writing bursts and breaks for structured conversations about academic writing and editing, this bootcamp will help you to push your writing substantially forward. Participants must agree not to check email, texts, or the web during writing periods.
9:00 to 9:05 – writing sprint
9:05 to 9:30 – facilitated conversation about writing problems & best practices
9:30 to 11:00 – writing block 1
11:00 to 11:15 – break
11:15 to 12:15 – writing block 2
12:15 to 1:00 – lunch
1:00 to 3:00 – writing block 3
3:00 to 3:15 – break
3:15 to 4:15 – writing block 4
4:15 to 4:45 – unstructured time for one-on-one conversations, feedback, or more writing
Participants are encouraged to bring a 5- to 10-page paper copy of their writing, for targeted feedback and recommended writing strategies.

*Light refreshments will be provided. You’re welcome to bring over your lunch with you!
*This bootcamp must have a minimum of 10 students to run.
*To avoid EventBrite fees, in-person payment at the GSS Office is available with exact cash or cheque only. No registration will be held via phone, email, or social media requests.
*If you request a refund after purchasing your ticket, note that Eventbrite won’t return the fees that they collected (new policy).
