THE GSS EXECUTIVES GIVE ADVICE TO INCOMING GRADUATE STUDENTS
Our Executives know a thing or two about the kind of information students need when they first come to UBC. Here are some words of wisdom.
Â

Hayley Lawrence
President
Â
If you are interested in improving graduate students’ experiences, join the GSS! I encourage you to make the most of your time at UBC, connect with others and engage with the GSS.
Â
Getting involved in a larger student community (your department’s GSA, a student club, or the GSS) is a great way to keep yourself engaged in something other than your graduate research and course work which can (and will!) get frustrating at times. Being part of a meaningful community will keep you going when everything else about grad school is bringing you down!
Â

Gautam Luhana
VP University &
Academic Affairs

Charles Adkins
VP External Relations
Whether it’s grades or social strife, don’t sweat the small stuff, be focused on your long-term happiness and success. You’re here at UBC to improve yourself, not to make yourself miserable.
Â
Know your limits: it can be hard to know when to pump the brakes, but it is important to know when to do it. Prioritizing your mental and physical health will allow you to perform your best academically and avoid burnout.
Â

Mahder Teffera
VP Students

Cesar Landin
Financial Officer
I would invite people to enjoy the city and make the most out of what the GSS has to offer.

Art Around Campus

Located at the intersection of Main Mall and Agronomy Road, the Reconciliation Totem Pole stands as a powerful symbol of respect and acknowledgment of the First Nations on whose land UBC resides. This important piece serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward reconciliation and the cultural significance of Indigenous art.

Right outside Thea Koerner House, this iconic fountain is more than just a beautiful feature; it’s a place where students and visitors alike can gather, reflect, and enjoy the serene ambiance. It’s also a key stop on many campus tours, symbolizing the heart of UBC’s vibrant community.
This 7-storey mural was painted by local artist Carson Ting in just three days! Standing 70 feet tall by 20 feet wide, the mural is located at 6111 University Blvd. Fun fact: Carson was selected to be the official FIFA 2026 World Cup artist to represent Canada 🇨🇦. Learn more about his UBC mural and see images of the painting process here.

Installed near the bus loop, artist Brent Sparrow’s installation’s “imagery is full of symbolism, the bird images (Science and mythological– Eagles and Thunderbirds) that are on a journey, a story made up from simple Salmon eggs. It suggests that learners come to the university where they grow into messengers, seekers and travelers.”
