PRESIDENT’S WELCOME MESSAGE FOR ORIENTATION

Emily Tang

GSS President 2025

Dear Graduate Students,

We are delighted you have chosen to study at UBC – a place known for its vibrant community and incredible diversity. Whether you’re a Vancouver local or an international student, fresh out of college or returning as a mature student, there is a place for you here. The Graduate Student Society (GSS) will be your home away from home, and we’ll be with you every step of the way.
The GSS offers a wide variety of events throughout the year, including:

Networking sessions

Comedy nights (because we all need a good laugh after exams and thesis writing!)

Puppy yoga (come show off those downward dogs)

Painting nights

Subsidized tickets for concerts, soccer games, and ski trips (typical Vancouverite activities, amirite?)

Game nights (maybe a meet-cute with an enemies-to-lovers trope, who knows?)

Family Day at Acadia Park

Grad Orientation Afterparty at Koerner’s Pub – August 28, 6-9 PM
(You should definitely come – it’s a great time. Who knows? You might even meet the love of your life. It’s happened before – true story!)

We also offer GSS Financial Aid (GSFA) – because we understand how tough life can get – and we advocate for:

Increased graduate student funding
Parental leave tuition pauses
Support in supervisory relationships
Housing security

…and so much more!

I’m really looking forward to meeting you all around campus. If you need anything – or if you’re interested in getting involved with the GSS – feel free to reach out to me at president@gss.ubc.ca.
As the UBC slogan puts it best:

Tuum est – It is yours (to slay)!

Warmly,
Emily Tang

THE GSS EXECUTIVES GIVE ADVICE TO INCOMING GRADUATE STUDENTS

Our Executives know a thing or two about the kind of information students need when they first come to UBC. Here are some words of wisdom. Some responses have been edited for length and/or clarity.

Emily Tang

President

My biggest advice is to be equipped with waterproof bag over your backpack or bring an umbrella or a poncho because it does rain here, and more often than you think. Sometimes the network forecast lies to you, so be prepared for that too!

Curiosity wins; ask early, take notes, and guard your time.

Daniel Amin-Allahverdian

VP University &

Academic Affairs

Aditi Adhikari

VP External Relations

It’s hard, especially if you’re a Graduate student who’s also juggling other roles. If you’re a parent, if you’re working full-time, etc. But you can do it with the right kind of support, and you need to find the right kind of support. Of course, the GSS is a really good support system for Graduate students, so reach out, be a part of the community.

The advice that I would give graduate students is really focusing on professional development opportunities, extracurriculars, and not just focusing on your academic life and your academic deadlines. Although those can get really extensive, really having a more holistic graduate student experience is important.

Anna Bakhchedjian

VP Students

Cesar Landin

Financial Officer

I would invite people to enjoy the city and make the most out of what the GSS has to offer.

Art Around Campus

Installed near the bus loop, artist Brent Sparrow’s installation’s “imagery is full of symbolism, the bird images (Science and mythological– Eagles and Thunderbirds) that are on a journey, a story made up from simple Salmon eggs. It suggests that learners come to the university where they grow into messengers, seekers and travelers.”
